OUR SERVICES

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a type of exercise-based therapy that focuses on retraining the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue to function properly. It helps improve breathing, chewing, speech, posture, and even sleep—by encouraging healthy habits and muscle patterns.

Myofunctional therapy can be helpful for:

  • Mouth breathing

  • Tongue thrust

  • Sleep-disordered breathing (like snoring or sleep apnea)

  • Orthodontic issues or relapse

  • Tongue tie

  • TMJ/TMD discomfort

Myofunctional therapy has roots dating back to the early 1900s, when a dentist named Dr. Alfred Rogers began noticing the connection between facial muscles and dental development. Over time, the field expanded through research in dentistry, speech-language pathology, and sleep medicine.

Today, it's recognized around the world as a key piece in treating many oral and airway-related concerns—especially when working alongside other professionals like ENTs, orthodontists, and speech therapists.
